While the price is ALWAYS a consideration, it’s important to look at all sides of the equation when investing in an expensive tool.  A budget machine might be great if you’re a hobbyist looking to supplement a MIG machine, but it won’t have the flexibility and power needed for larger applications.

We’ve ranked the following machines based on a variety of factors including features, price, performance, and durability.  Some will have added benefits including portability.  You’ll have to decide which is best for you based on your specific needs.   With that in mind here are some important features you should consider in any TIG machine.

Important Features of a Tig Welding Machine

Though there is a lot of marketing in terms of what makes a good TIG welding machine here are the most important features, capabilities, and functions you should look for.

Flexible Amperage

A good TIG welding machine is capable of operating at a wide range of amperages.  This allows you to work with a wide variety of materials and metal thicknesses.  Basically the wider the amperage range the more flexibility you’ll have.

Solid Duty Cycle

In the U.S. (and many other countries) duty cycle is a measurement of how long a welding machine can run at a given output in a ten-minute span.  So a 200A machine with a 40% duty cycle could run for 4 minutes at 200A before needing to be cooled.

Less expensive models will have lower duty cycles (20% or lower) as they have smaller power supplies.  Higher quality TIGs will have duty cycles upwards of 60%.

Both AC and DC Capabilities

Welding steel requires DC current only.  However, if you plan to weld materials like aluminum or magnesium you will need a machine with both AC and DC capabilities.  Aluminum oxidizes so quickly that the pulsing from AC current is needed to “clean off” the oxidation as it occurs.

That said, if you have plans to stick to steel only, save you $$$ and get a DC only machine.

Arc Stability

Arc stability at lower amperage is important for working on thin and delicate materials.  Too much power and you’ll warp the metal.  Too little and your arc becomes unstable.  Stability below 10A should be considered if you’re working with thinner metals.

Heat Controls

A heat control function is another important feature of any TIG welder.  Warping of thinner metals during a weld is typically the result of uncontrolled heat output.  Many units come with a regulator that allows for precise control of this heat.

Balance Control for AC Operation

If you choose to go with an AC capable machine, a balance control adjustment is an excellent feature to have.  This essentially provides you with control over how much time the welder spends in “cleaning” mode (of aluminum oxide for example) vs “penetration” mode where the actual welding is taking place.

The price tag is surprisingly low given the amount of power you get with this machine.  That said the unit also offers incredibly good performance.  Arc stability is fantastic.  Heck it even offers a 60% cycle duty at 200A.  Pretty much blows away everything in it’s price class.  If you’re looking for a budget machine, you can go wrong with the AHP.

The second place goes to Dynasty 210 from Miller.  There is a significant price jump between this and the AlphaTIG, but Miller has long been considered one of the absolute best manufacturers out there.  This is the type of machine you can build a business around.

It offers amazing flexibility with an amperage range from 1A-210A.  It can handle steel from 0.002 in. (0.05 mm) – 1/4 in. (6.4 mm) and aluminum from 0.012 in. (0.3 mm) – 1/4 in. (6.4 mm).  The duty cycle is 60% at 210A and it can handle single or three-phase power.  At 47lbs it’s no lightweight but it offers unparalleled performance and durability.  It is a SERIOUS investment but should serve you for years to come.

#3.  Eastwood ProTig 200 Review

Coming in third place is the ProTIG 200 from Eastwood.  More in line with the Alpha on price this unit offers solid performance at a budget price.  It’s the heaviest one in the group at 61lbs.

The unit operates on both 110v and 220v and has a duty cycle of 20% at 200A.  Pre and post gas are adjustable.  And so is the AC balance for welding aluminum.  It offers both remote foot pedal and control.

If you’re looking for a budget unit that’s got some power, this is a good unit.  But it’s duty cycle is considerably lower than the AHP so that’s the route we would go.

Used as a plasma cutter is it capable of clean cuts on up to 3/4″ steel.  It has a duty cycle of 60% at 60A and 100% at 50A which is pretty impressive for any plasma cutter.  If you’re looking for a highly flexible TIG/cutter this is a great choice at a great price.

It’s a single-phase AC/DC with an amperage range from 3A all the way up to 310A.  It can handle steel from 0.012 in. (0.3 mm) – 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) and aluminum from 0.015 in. (0.4 mm) – 3/8 in. With a max recommended cutting thickness of 1/8″, this guy isn’t going to blow you away with its power.  It’s rated at 15A so it can be used with just about any outlet.  However, it has just a 30% duty cycle so it’s not designed for heavy usage.  Given its diminutive power supply, we were a bit concerned about how this unit would perform, but within the specified recommendations it is pretty impressive.  It continuously cut through 1/8″ steel with clean lines and even managed a reasonably clean cut through 3/8″ material.

The Air Cut 15C is capable of cutting a wide variety of metals.  This includes stainless steel, aluminum, mild steel, copper and their alloys.  The pilot-arc ignition even allows it to cut painted materials.

The Thermal Arc 15C is lightweight and with a 20′ torch lead, is super convenient for working on vehicles. At just 29 pounds, it is the lightest cutter in our comparison.

While it’s not going to win any competitions for cutting capacity, this unit pleasantly surprised us.  And the 20ft torch lead is really nice for those that work specifically on cars.

The price is the highest of the three models but not by much.  Besides the performance was definitely the best among the three.

The Hobart 12ci is the most powerful of the three units we chose for this comparison.  The other two units can be used with a 15A circuit while the 12ci requires a 20A.  The unit weighs just 31 pounds.  That puts it just a pound over the Thermal Dynamics unit.

We’re a bit biased towards Hobart’s products here at Pro Machinist Tools and for good reason.  They put a huge emphasis on build quality and this translates to tools that perform well and last for years.  On top of that, they back everything up with a solid warranty.

This unit is no exception.  It performed extremely well in cutting 1/8″ steel and easily severed 1/4″ as per their specifications.  The only reason it got second instead of first was because of the higher power requirements.  Normally this slight difference wouldn’t matter, but in a class where convenience is key, requiring a 20A circuit is a slight ding.  (The shorter torch cord was another ding although slight)

The Forney 317 115FI with Built-In Compressor can cut mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, cast iron, and other conductive metals.  Just like the Thermal Dynamics unit this one uses 120V, 15A so it can be plugged in anywhere.  And of course, the lower power rating translates to relatively thin max cuts.

This machine will cut 1/8″ and will sever 1/4″. Cut speeds of at least 20 inches per minute (IPM)  It incorporates drag torch technology which provides more precise cuts by allowing the user to move (drag) the torch directly across the metal surface.  This can be a handy feature for those new to plasma cutting, but won’t have much of an impact if you’re used to working with this type of equipment.

Our biggest complaint with this unit was the slow ignition time.  It took about 3 seconds from pulling the trigger on the torch until it ignited.  This can be a bit cumbersome if you’re making lots of smaller cuts.

From a performance perspective, it was a bit slower than the Thermal Dynamics unit in cutting through 1/8″ steel.  However it is almost $200 cheaper, so if the price is a big deal, this unit could be a good option.

Duty Cycle

Some cutters are designed to be used for shorter cycles.  Though they maximize the amount of power available during that time, they shouldn’t be expected to perform the same under significant or heavy usage.  Usually, the higher the amperage rating, the higher the duty cycle.

While many units can make a 1/4″ cut, if you’re pushing the maximum of your unit, the cuts will not be as precise or clean. If you’re looking for a unit that can go all day long under heavy load you’ll be better off making your buying decision based on the average thickness the unit is capable of cutting.

Input Voltage and Amperage

Another very important thing to consider is the input voltage of the unit.  Most cutters are either 120 or 22o volts.  Some cutting units are able to work with either.  If your shop has a 220v outlet available, then your best bet is to go with a 220V cutter.

It helps if you think of voltage as a garden hose.  The larger the hose, the more water that can go through it.  That same principle applies with electricity, so if you’re got a 220v outlet, go with a cutter that can handle higher voltages.  If you’re limited to 120v, you’ll probably want to have a 20A circuit installed in your shop.  Most residential breakers are 15A only and are often shared by multiple outlets, which can be an issue if you’re cutter pulls too much amperage for the outlet.

Cutting Speed and Thickness

You need to have a good understanding of the kinds of materials you will be cutting, and choose a unit that can handle it comfortably and quickly. The speed at which the unit cuts becomes more important depending on the length of the cuts you need to make.  The closer you get to the maximum thickness rating of a unit, the slower you will have to go.  And even if you slow down you’ll often have to go back and clean up the cut. Nothing is more frustrating than having to go back over every cut because you’re bumping up against your cutter’s limitations.

Start Method

There two types of start methods: contact and high frequency. A contact start is a good choice if you’ll be working near computers, analytical equipment, or other sensitive electronic devices. This will ensure that it causes no interference with your other devices.

#1. RAMSOND CUT 50DY 50AMP Review (Best Value)

If you’re looking for a unit that offers the most bang for the buck, the Ramsond has it in spades. I’ll admit when this model came out a few years ago I was pretty skeptical of how well such an inexpensive unit would perform. On top of that, there were some initial quality control issues. But they have eliminated all of these problems by upgrading many of the internal components. The result is a solid and reliable plasma cutting system.

The Ramsond gets the top spot because of a few important reasons. One is its overall size and weight. At only 19 pounds this guy is completely portable.

Number two. The maximum cut limit is 3/4″ with a 60% duty cycle. That is SERIOUSLY impressive for a unit this size and price. Severe cuts can be made on thicknesses up to 1″. Keep in mind that it is a rough cut, and should NOT be considered for a regular working load.

The CUT 50 can run on either 110 or 220v. It’s important to remember that running on 110v lowers the cutting capability of the unit. So if you’re looking to cut thicker materials make sure you’re using a 220V outlet.

Because of this flexibility, the unit doesn’t ship with a plug so you’ll need to install your own based on your power. This comes in handy when you need to travel with your unit since where you’re going may not have the same outlets as your shop.

It does require an external air compressor. Most shop compressors will do fine, as with any cutter you’ll want one with enough force to keep the tip cool and free of molten metal.

PERFORMANCE

While this unit and others in its price range are not going to offer the same performance as the Hypertherm Powermax45 or the Miller extreme, it does get pretty damn close.

On top of all that their units are made right here in the U.S.A. They even OEM products for other manufacturers in the industry.

Hypertherm’s reputation rests solidly on their product’s ability to do exactly what they say it will. In that regard, the Powermax45 is an absolute beast. This guy can make precise cuts through 1/2″ steel all day long. And while it carries a hefty price tag, it’s easy on consumables (186% more efficient than some models) which means it’s easier on your checkbook over the long haul.

As an added perk, Hypertherm’s consumables are less expensive than those of many other manufacturers. This is something that should NOT be overlooked if you’re operating a business where maintaining profit margins is important.

OPERATION

The controls on the Powermax45 are very straightforward. There’s a mode switch that toggles between three primary modes:

  • Continuous pilot arc – this mode allows you to easily cut perforated metal such as grating.
  • Non-continuous pilot arc – this is the standard setting used for cutting metal plates of varying thickness.
  • Gouging – for punching holes in plate metal (use specific gouging consumables for best results)

The amperage knob adjusts how much power you need. This should be adjusted based on the thickness of the material you intend to cut as well as the ideal distance of the tip from the metal.

The torch is comfortable to grip and easy to operate. This makes extended cuts relatively easy on the hands.

Miller is another powerhouse when it comes to plasma cutting systems. Like Hypertherm, they have built a reputation on solid construction, reliability, and incredible customer service.

The Spectrum 625 X-treme is a workhorse of a cutter. It’s actually rated to cut 5/8″ mild steel vs the 1/2″ max for the Hypertherm. In terms of build construction and quality, it is essentially an industrial quality tool. It even offers both 110V and 220v power so you can use it just about anywhere. Obviously you’re limited on thickness when using with 110V.

It offers much of the same functionality of the Powermax45 including an auto re-fire capability that allows for cutting materials like grates and other perforated metals. It also offers quick and secure attachments for the torch, gas, and power.

To be totally honest the comparison eventually came down to price. The consumables for the Miller are slightly more expensive and the unit itself costs a bit more as well. Other than that, it would make a solid addition to any shop.

One very surprising aspect of the 625 is its’ size and weight. At only 21 pounds, it is a full 16lbs lighter than the Powermax45. If you’re looking for a unit that is extremely portable this is a huge plus.

The controls and operation of the 625 X-treme are simple and straightforward. It comes with the XT-40 handheld torch, which has been redesigned to be more efficient than previous models with consumables.

All in all this little unit packs a powerful punch.

If you’re looking for a unit that can go all day long under heavy load you’ll be better off making your buying decision based on the average thickness the unit is capable of cutting.  Don’t overlook this component in your decision.  While many units can make a 1/4″ cut, if you’re pushing the maximum of your unit, the cuts will not be as precise or clean.

Input Voltage and Amperage:

Another important feature to consider is the input voltage of the unit.  Most cutters are either 120 or 22o volts.  Some units are capable of working with either.  If you have a 220v outlet available in your shop then your best bet is to go that route.

Think of voltage as a garden hose.  The bigger the hose, the more water can go through it.  The same principle applies with electricity, so if you’re got a 220v outlet, go with a cutter that can handle higher voltages.  If you’re limited to just 120v, you’ll most likely want to have a 20A circuit installed in your shop.  Most residential breakers are 15A only and are often shared by multiple outlets.  This can be an issue if you’re cutter pulls too much amperage for the outlet.  Here are the typical outlets for each type of circuit.

The Ramsond gets high marks because of a few important factors.  One is its size.  At only 19 pounds this guy is very portable.  It has a max cut limit of 3/4″ which is seriously impressive for a unit this size.  It will perform a sever cut on material up to 1″.  That is a rough cut though and shouldn’t be considered for a regular working load.

The Lotos CT520D has a lot going for it.  It is a 3 in 1 unit that is capable of cutting, tig welding, and stick welding.  The unit is substantially larger than the Ramsond weighing in at almost 32 pounds.  But with the extra capability this unit provides, it can pretty much eliminate 2 tools from your shop.

The third-place finisher in our inexpensive plasma cutter challenge is another Lotos product.  Unlike it’s bigger brother, the LT5000D is strictly for cutting.  And while it doesn’t have all of the features of the CT520D, it does what it’s designed to do remarkably well, and for significantly less money.

It is a dual voltage unit that operates at both 110 and 220v.  However, if you’re going to be maxing out the cutting thickness on this unit you most definitely want to use 220v.  It has a similar duty cycle to the other two units in the comparison.  And it comes in at just a couple pounds heavier than the Ramsond.
